The cost of smoking on your health
Smoking causes cancer, breathing problems, and heart disease and stroke.
Thousands of chemicals are in cigarette smoke. At least 69 of them cause cancer. Smoking is linked to many types of cancer. Smoking is the cause of 1 out of 3 cancer deaths in this country. Smoking causes 8 in 10 lung cancers.
Smoking causes COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Chronic bronchitis is a type of COPD. Emphysema is a more severe type of COPD. COPD is the number 3 cause of death in the U.S.
Smoking raises your risk for heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is the number 1 cause of death in the U.S. Stroke is the number 5 cause of death. Smoking also causes cholesterol to build up in blood vessels. That makes them narrower. Smoking makes it easier for blood to clot. A blood clot in the blood vessels of the heart muscle causes a heart attack. A blood clot in the brain causes a stroke.
Smoking harms people around you who are exposed to your smoke. Children who breathe in your smoke are more likely to be sick. They can get bronchitis, pneumonia, and ear infections.
